SUPERTHEORY

In the Supertheory series I am dealing with how scientific information functions in popular culture. This work of mine is concerned with the ways in which knowledge existing in the form of numbers, calculations, data sets, or formulae is translated into the language of the visual in order to make it more accessible to the so-called amateurs, as well as with the ways in which such representations affect perception of reality. I am paying particular attention here to the moment—essential to me—when visualisations cease to only be teaching aids as they become at the same time a certain image of the world; when the scientific nature of illustrations fades away and their aesthetic function comes to the fore. In these works I make references to astronomical photographs, models, and visualisations found in popular science publications, and also to sci-fi-themed illustrations.
